Neurodegenerative Diseases

The disorders which are caused due to lose of function or death of nerve cells of the brain over time are collectively called as Neurodegenerative Diseases. They slowly cause degeneration of the structure and function of central nervous system or peripheral nervous system. The two types of problems caused by neurodegenerative diseases are:

  • Ataxias – Problems involved with the movement
  • Dementias – Problems associated with mental functioning
Different types of disorders are:

  • Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other dementias
  • Parkinson’s disease (PD) and PD-related disorders
  • Prion disease
  • Motor Neuron diseases (MND)
  • Huntington’s disease (HD)
  • Spino-cerebellar ataxia (SCA)
  • Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)
