Angioplasty

Angioplasty is a surgical procedure to open the blocked artery that supply blood to the heart muscle and restores the blood flow to the heart. The blocked artery is opened by inflating a tiny balloon into it. So it is known as balloon angioplasty. This procedure is also called as percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty or percutaneous coronary intervention. It is generally used in the treatment of atherosclerosis. It uses a balloon catheter that is inserted in a blocked blood vessel to widen it and this will improve blood flow to the heart. Medical imaging is used to guide the catheter to the place of blockade. A stent, metal mesh tube is used in combination with angioplasty to ensure the vessel remains open. Angioplasty improves the symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, heart attack to open the blocked artery quickly. Risks of angioplasty are re-narrowing of artery, blood clots, bleeding. Other risks include heart attack, coronary artery damage, kidney problems, stroke, abnormal heart rhythms.
