Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy is a disease of heart muscle. The muscle becomes enlarged, thick and rigid. It is either acquired or hereditary. If the disease worsens the heart becomes weaker and it is unable to pump blood throughout the body and it even causes arrhythmias. The main types of cardiomyopathy are:

  • Dilated Cardiomyopathy
  • Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy
  • Arrythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia
  • Restrictive Cardiomyopathy
  • Transthyretin amyloid Cardiomyopathy
  • Stress induced Cardiomyopathy (Broken Heart Cardiomyopathy)
  • Ischemic Cardiomyopathy

In case of cardiomyopathy the muscle becomes harder to deliver blood to the heart and it finally leads to heart failure. Symptoms include breathlessness, swelling of legs and feet, bloated stomach, arrhythmia, fatigue. Treatment includes drugs like ACE inhibitors, diuretics, implanted devices, surgery and in severe cases transplantation. Cardiomyopathy leads to other heart problems like Heart failure, Blood clots, Valve problems, Cardiac arrest and sudden death.
