Congenital Heart Defect

Congenital is a defect in the structure of heart. It is a type of birth defect. The defect involves the arteries, veins, valves of heart, wall of the heart. The causes of congenital heart diseases are genetic, environmental or a combination of both. The disease is classified as either cyanotic congenital heart disease or acyanotic congenital heart disease. It may disrupt the normal flow of blood to the heart. Symptoms include rapid breathing, tiredness, poor weight gain, cyanosis, fatigue, poor blood circulation, chest pain. The disease is diagnosed during pregnancy by fetal echocardiography. Treatment involves implanted heart devices, catheter procedures, surgeries like open-heart surgery, heart transplant and medication. Drugs like digoxin and diuretics are used in the treatment of congenital heart defect. Complication of congenital heart defect is heart failure.
