Pacemaker

Pacemaker is a small device which uses electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate. It is placed in the chest or abdomen to control abnormal heart rhythms. Most common reasons for pacemaker recommendation are bradycardia and heart block. Bradycardia is a type of arrhythmia in which the heart beats slower than normal. Heart block is a disorder that occurs if an electric signal is slowed or disrupted. Types of pacemakers include:

  • Single chamber pacemaker
  • Dual chamber pacemaker
  • Biventricular pacemaker

These pacemakers replace the defective natural pacemaker. Pacemakers are implanted either temporarily or permanently. Pacemakers improve the symptoms caused by slow heartbeat such as fatigue, fainting etc. Complications of pacemaker insertion are allergic reaction, bruising, bleeding, infection, damage to nerves or blood vessels, a collapsed lung, a punctured heart.
