Radiation therapy is one of the most used treatments for the cancer patients. In this therapy the cancerous cells are destroyed by exposing them to very high radiations in order to kill them. The radiation oncologists are the group of specialized people who performs this process of radiation oncology. The radiations imposed on to the patient’s cancerous cells will be highly targeted and regulated doses based on the condition of the patient and stage of the cancer the patient is suffering with. There are different kinds of radiation therapies available from the departments off radiation oncology like Conformational Radiation Therapy (CRT), Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image- guided radiation therapy ( IGRT), Volume guided arc therapy (VMAT), Brachytherapy in the treatment of prostate cancer and breast cancer. The team of radiation oncologists or as a complete department offers different services starting from the consultation of the patient, understanding the need of radiation depending upon the condition of the patient which is done most often by computation tomography (CT), offering required radiation therapy, and following up of the patient with the required care and consultation. Diverse side effects are observed with the radiation therapy for certain cancer types. For example most common side effects like hair loss, fatigue, skin changes, sexual and fertility problems. In the radiation therapy in the process of killing the cancerous cells even the healthy cells and tissues are damaged which shows up more specific side effects even moth later after the treatment which can be considered as the later effects.
