Endocrine Surgery

Endocrinology is the study of endocrine glands. Endocrine glands are a group of glands in the body that secrete hormones. The purpose of the secreted hormones is to evoke a selected response in other cells of the body which are located distantly. Endocrine surgery is the division of surgery that specializes in the surgical treatment of endocrine glands, including the thyroid gland, the parathyroid glands, the adrenal glands, glands of the endocrine pancreas, and some neuroendocrine glands.

Endocrine Surgery procedure performed with its emphasis on at least one of the endocrine organs is alluded to as endocrine surgery.

Types of surgeries included are:

  • Thyroid surgery-Surgery of thyroid glands involves either removal of thyroid glands which is known as thyroidectomy or part of the glands known as obectomy or hemithyroidectomy.
  • Parathyroid surgery: Surgery involves total removal of the parathyroid gland which is known as parathyroidectomy which is performed to treat hyperparathyroidism.
  • Adrenal surgery: Surgery in which the adrenal gland is removed surgically known as adrenalectomy in conditions like Conn syndrome, pheochromocytoma, adrenocortical cancer, etc.
  • Pancreatic surgery: Surgery which is performed to treat the diseases of the endocrine pancreas which include insulinomas, gastrinomas, etc.,
