Influenza

Influenza is a type of viral infection. It is commonly called as flu. Other flus such as swine flu, asian flu, hong kong flu and victoria flu. The flu attacks nose, throat and lungs. Flu viruses travel through air droplets when the infected person coughs, sneezes, talks and then the virus transfers to eyes, nose and mouth. There are two types of influenza viruses. Type A and Type B. It is a RNA virus belongs to paramyxovirus families that are commonly causes respiratory infection. Some of the symptoms of influenza resemble the common cold, but influenza is more serious condition than a cold. Its symptoms include fever, cough, chills, sore throat, weakness, nasal congestion and aches. It is a disease of the lungs and is highly contagious. It can be especially dangerous to the elderly, children, and the chronically ill, weakens immune system, pregnancy, obesity. Ear infections, bronchitis, heart problems, asthma glare-uos, pneumonia are the complications developed due to influenza. The disease is prevented by hand washing, surgical masks. Flu vaccines provide seasonal immunity. Oseltamivir is a neuraminidase inhibitor is used in the treatment of influenza. In addition drugs like pain relievers, decongestants, expectorants are used in the treatment of influenza. Analgesics like acetaminophen and ibuprofen are used to ease the symptoms. Decongestants relive nasal decongestion and pressure in sinuses and ears. Expectorants loosen the thick mucus secretions which makes the head clogged and causes cough.
